PlayStation 5 has outsold PlayStation 3. And sold more than Switch 2 over the holidays

Sony has boasted about the number of PlayStation 5 consoles shipped over the last three months of 2025. In total, the PS5 has reached 92.2 million consoles shipped.
PlayStation 5, as of the end of 2025, has been shipped in 92.2 million units. Although that figure isn’t the same as the number of consoles actually sold, we can still say that the PS5 has now overtaken the PlayStation 3 (87.4 million units) and has become the fourth best-selling Sony console to date.
| Console | Lifetime Shipments | Release Year | Current Rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 2 | 155+ million | 2000 | #1 |
| PlayStation 4 | 117+ million | 2013 | #2 |
| PlayStation | 102+ million | 1994 | #3 |
| PlayStation 5 | 92.2 million | 2020 | #4 |
| PlayStation 3 | 87.4 million | 2006 | #5 |
In the last three months of 2025, eight million PS5 consoles were sold – 1.5 million fewer than in the same period in 2024. However, that still beats the Nintendo Switch 2 by one million units in the same period.
Sony also proudly noted that the number of active PlayStation players increased by three million in the last quarter of the year, bringing the total to 132 million active users.
In the same period, a total of 97.2 million games were sold, which is 1.3 million more than last year. Of those game sales, 76% were digital, representing a 2% increase compared to 2024.
