Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold announced. A frozen new world awaits in January 2027
We got all of the details.

Square Enix announced at the Fan Fest 2026 in Anaheim the next expansion for the long running MMO, titled Evercold to launch in January 2027. This was, as director and producer Naoki Yoshida (“Yoshi-P“) framed it himself, the beginning of an entirely new era for one of gaming’s most beloved MMOs.
The upcoming adventure continues a new saga started by the previous expansion, Dawntrail. The ongoing story arc has been officially named the Godless Realms Saga. This positions Evercold as the first chapter in what promises to be a sweeping, multi-expansion narrative – a new generation of FFXIV storytelling following the beloved Hydaelyn-Zodiark arc that concluded with Endwalker.
The main scenario will take Warriors of Light to The Fourth – one of the shards of Etheirys, which is slowly succumbing to an ever spreading ice. Its cities and people are caught in the grip of an unnatural winter with no end in sight.

No fan festival announcement would be complete without job reveals and even though there were no specifics, we know will be a Tank and physical ranged DPS. Both of which are original to FFXIV and not based on classic Final Fantasy jobs.
But new jobs aren’t the only gameplay change. Yoshi-p announced what may be the most significant overhaul to FFXIV’s combat systems in the game’s history, and introduction of Reborn Mode and Evolved mode for all 21 jobs.

Reborn Mode preserves the current combat system as we know it, rotations, button counts and mechanics that have accumulated over the years. It earns its name since it’s been around from A Realm Reborn.
Evolved mode on the other hand offers new rotations and reduced input count. Yoshi-P pointed out that this is not an easy mode but rather a redesign which emphasizes job identity, making each job feel more distinct rather than a variation of a template – a complaint which many players had over the years.
Players will be able to swap between Reborn and Evolved mode freely outside of combat giving you options on which one to use.
However, new jobs introduced in Evercold will only have Evolved mode, signaling that Evolved is the direction the game’s combat is moving going forward.
While FFXIV always allowed you to play any job on the same character, in reality you couldn’t easily gear all of them for the endgame. With the new gearing change you’ll be able to “reflect” your highest level to other jobs, letting you easily play whichever job you feel like.
We’ll also be getting a new raid difficulty that’s somewhere between Normal and Savage, allowing for more gearing opportunities, and for more people to try raiding.
Alongside gameplay changes there are also new customization options. Color picker for eye, hair and skin tone, improved customization of eyes and lips; addition of eye shadow and face paint layering will go a long way in making your character feel truly yours.
Plus, we’ll get the option to toggle certain parts and accessories or clothing pieces on or off; for example: shoulder pads.

There will also be a focus on open world to make it feel less lonely. New areas, along with old ones, will have new “exciting, dynamic” content.
New Season System
One of the more unexpected announcements was a new Season system, replacing the game’s longstanding update model. Each season will contain two patches, for example patch 8.0 and 8.1. The team will also try to reduce the amount of time between the patches.
The familiar Daily Roulette system along with Tomestones – a longtime staple of endgame gearing is gone, being replaced with a more weekly-based activity structure, where you can do different sets of activities instead of just running a daily roulette.

After 13 years, same-region player matching will be implemented, allowing you to group up with people across the whole region easily instead of traveling to different datacenters.
Crossover With Anime
A crossover with one of the most iconic anime franchises of all time was also announced.
EVANGELION – Ghosts of Desire was announced as a three part Alliance raid.

Evercold arrives at a pivotal moment for Final Fantasy XIV.
Dawntrail, while not without its merits, did not land with the emotional weight that Shadowbringers or Endwalker had achieved, and a segment of the playerbase drifted away during its lifecycle.
The announcement today is a clear statement that they have not only been hearing the feedback, but also responding to it – with ambition.
