The silver medal winning figure skating pair Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava from Georgia performed an unusual figure skating routine at the closing of the Winter Olympic Games, in which Mortal Kombat received unexpected promotion.

Figure skating has very few points of contact with gaming and I definitely did not expect that I would be writing about this discipline here because of the Winter Olympic Games. However, somehow the incompatible things came together yesterday, and as part of the gala exhibition at the closing of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milano Cortina, a video game theme appeared.

More precisely, the franchise Mortal Kombat received unexpected attention. The silver medalists in figure skating, the Georgian pair Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava, performed their routine with elements from the Mortal Kombat fight, accompanied by music from the first Mortal Kombat movie.

Friendship Instead of a Fatality

Of course, figure skating has nothing to do with the violence from Mortal Kombat, so the whole “match” ultimately ended with a Friendship instead of a Fatality.

Video of their Mortal Kombat routine – it’s really amazing:

As strange as the whole thing was to see, it’s nice that gaming got its little hommage at a sports event that is followed by a totally different type of audience.

Hope to see more of things like this in the future.
